I am thinking it was Big Star and some of the IGA stores that gave King Korn. I do remember the stamps very well, but I cant place a redemption center or a catalog. Same with Plaid stamps, cant place a redemption center ? I know Kroger gave Top Value, Alber's gave S&H Green, I dont remember Liberal giving anything and A&P gave Plaid, past that I dont know what everybody else had.

You got it - on the West side. I believe there was a Dunhills?? Mens Store on the SW corner of Ludlow & 4th and that was next door. We had 2 buildings separated by an alley and there was a covered walkway connecting the 2nd floors of the 2 buildings - I thought that was pretty trick back then. HA

Been wayyyyy too long ago but all I remember was Dunhills at the N end of the block, then the EFM Stamp Building, an alley then the EFM Incentive building then 5th St (I think). IF there was anything else in that block, I can't picture it.

My memory is hazy on this, but Wilke's moved from somewhere on Ludlow Street to the SW corner of West Fourth Street and Ludlow, maybe around 1990. Ultimately, they were unable to compete and closed, just a few years ago.

I have heard rumours of that bar above the Victory Theater. Could it have been the "Blue Parrot", or something like that at one point? I was told that you knocked on a door, someone checked you out through a small window in the door, and then let you in, if you were acceptable. Did Dayton Police ever raid gay bars in Dayton? Did they arrest people? Anybody know?

Marck1957: Like thomas said it was a private club called the Tiki or something like that. I know it was a gay place because I knew all the guys that worked at the Victory and they told me about it. rumor had it that they had illegal gambling and or card rooms up there too.but that was just rumors, I dont know that for sure. they always used to say that there was a lot of illegal activity up there. maybe it was the gay activities that they were talking about. this was back in the early to mid 60s I am not sure what was legal and what was not along those lines. I never heard of any Club being raided just because it was a gay plaace, but this may have taken place in earlier times.

Thanks Rat! I called my old old friend who remembers it from the old days. He did say it was the Tiki. They didn't serve any alcohol, but had drag queen stuff going on. They were open after the bars closed, and he remembers it as a late night hang-out place. He tells me it was a "piano" bar, where some guy ("Harry") played piano music. He doesn't remember any gay bar/hang-out ever being raided. Homosexual activity was illegal in the old days (as you probably know). That changed after the Stonewall riots in New York in the 60s. Perhaps the Tiki avoided trouble by only doing drag shows, and not selling alcohol also? My old friend says he thinks the Tiki closed in the late 60s.

OK, this will really cause some to think. Riverdale mentioned the 'late night crowd' and the places that were open that late. I'm talking about late 60's here - 68-71. After a night at the Diamond Club, a bunch of us would go out for 'breakfast' around 1-2 in the morning at some restaurant that I can't remember at all. BUT for some reason, I tend to think it was back out in the area heading toward Kettering - maybe Linden, Wayne, Watervalite area? Anyone remember this at all? It was just a small homestyle place that probably was open all night. I remember doing that after $3 Wed or Sun beer night at the Diamond Club, getting some sleep then heading to work the next morning. NOW I'm lucky to be awake at 11:00.

I'm confused too - you said John Glenn, about 100 yds S of Linden. I can't think of where those 2 roads were ever near each other. If by John Glenn, you meant Col Glenn (Airways) it was way N of 35 and Linden was on the S side of 35 quite a ways apart. BUT that place is a vague memory - I just remember going out to breakfast after the club somewhere. Been WAY too many years for that memory to be clear HA Vette - the guy I was asking you about with the vette out near Shilo is Norm and we think it is a red 67??? He takes it to the local shows.

I don't have a copy of the book I wrote on the Arcade, but it can be found at the Dayton library. When I get my "borrowed" copy back I will list what I have. In the mid 1980s I worked there for a short time. There was a Cooper's Watch Works that fixed watches and cleaned men's shavers. A shoe repair shop, a popcorn shop, Ashley's upstairs, a baggage place, a beauty parlor on the second floor, Hammer's tobacco shop somewhere in there. Others that I can recall from the book over the years, but weren't food vendors, was Elder Beerman's, Learners, Casual Corner(?), McCrory's (of course), Coca-Cola Museum.

The Yum Yum was in the building that n0w houses L'Auberge, on Far Hills right near Town and Country shopping center. We ate there many times in the late fifties/early sixties. The menu was family food - I remember having a kids portion pork chop dinner. Nice place.

There was a DMV office on the first floor where people used to buy their auto tags.

Fisher...was it Henrici's on top of the Mall Motor Inn? It was between East Third Street and East Fourth Street. There was a classy rooftop restaurant there. WHIO did a radio show from a table in a corner of the place. This would match your time frame.

I lived in Parkside next to the administration building, 411 Van Wert and from when I started school in 1948 I think, I was driven one time by an aunt who had a car during a heavy downpour, the remainder of the time we walked. I went to Webster Elementary school on Maryland and Chapel just south of Troy Street through the 6th grade.
Early on we walked to school, back for the hour and a half lunch then back to school and home after school.
The we took our lunch and finally around the 5th grade we bought it usually up on Troy Street.
We passed Burry's Bakery on Troy, they had delicious baked goods, I sat next to Carol Burry. In 1951 or 2 a picture of Carol's brother was put in the window in his service uniform, he had been killed in Korea.
We sometimes ate at Shock's Treat Shop, just past Burry's Bakery going towards Leo. Looking back it was garbage, big greasy Hamburgers, greasy french fries and a Coke. We found better eateries than Shock's Treat Shop. For 7th and 8th grade, we had moved, was evicted from ParkSide as my mother was earning too much at Wright Pat as a clerkstenographer to qualify for Parkside. So we moved to McGuffy Homes and our address was 62 Messina Place, next to Claridge Park just a bit from The Catherine Kennedy Brown Mansion, not far from McGuffey School. Walking to school from there was simple in comparison to Webster.
Gave me strong legs though. When I was 40 some genius invented and marketed a really good outdoor skate wheel, fantastic and were made in hard, medium and soft for various surfaces. I got into skating, started skating to and from ASU, 10.5 miles away, more than a marathon distance both ways and skating around campus. I completed 2 Long Beach Roller Skating Marathons two years in a row, I became ambidextrous which I figure saved me from paralysis after my brain aneurysm in the summer of 2004. Spent 7 weeks there, only remember 1. lol. The stroke was truly a good experience, a life experience that is invaluable while tip toeing through the human minefield of life.

I used to ride my bike to Stragands IGA (Spelling)near South Dixie & Stroop. I stood in the parking lot watching Frigidare workers picking up unbroken beer bottles from the street when a beer truck exited the parking lot dumping them everywhere. There was also a bar next door to the grocery that had great pizza. My parents never knew my friend & I went in there for pizza. I think we were 10.

In 1962 I met and started dating my first husband who was from "Old North Dayton".His family lived on Macready St. His parents owned and operated the North Dayton Packing Co. which was located in the alley directly behind the Konnis(spelling)Cafe on Valley St.His father,Joe Bocko, smoked the best bacon I have ever tasted in my life!He would send us all the way to Greenville to pick up sawdust from some obscure place. That was the only thing he used in his smoke room which was located in the basement under the shop. We spent a lot of time in Hartels at the corner of Troy and Leo,catty-corner from Kiser High School.Does anyone remember the place? It was there that I was introduced to big plates of crispy french fries smothered in brown gravy....yummy! There was a place which escapes my memory, where we would go play pinball. The only thing I can remember is that an old man ran the place.Any ideas on where this was located?I know it was in north dayton somewhere! Getting od does have its drawbacks!

pie8me 10 posts Aug 28, 2009 2:12 PM How about the fire at the "Barrel Factory" at Patterson and Fairfield. That area is still toxic.
Anyone remember a big passenger airplane landing on I-75 somewhere north of Tipp City. Would have been early 60's I'm guessing. 75 was still under construction so there wasn't any traffic I believe. My Grandad drove up and took pictures of it, still have the slides. Would love to get the details on this as it's just a fuzzy memory for me.
How about when Sonic booms were a common sound around here.
That transport plane that landed on IS75. I was with the Dayton Post of the OSHP at that time and remember going up with another patrolman to guard and help secure the area. Big plane! You see Piper Cubs landing on highways but not too many transport planes. It was suppose to have knocked a bridge pillar out of whack and dumped fuel on a car as it slid down the highway. Then in regards to that plane crash at Beavercreek HS. My speech class was right next to where that plane came down. Talked mom into keeping us home from school that day. Good thing. Living in Dayton I remember a lot of bad plane crashes. Saw a jet pilot bale out just before his plane crashed into a home near Indian Ripple Rd. A lot of people died that day in that home. So sad. I lived on Ken Klare Dr and Grange Hall when the barrel factory fire took place. Barrels shooting in the air, looked like Vietnam. They say that fire was so hot the firefighters couldn't even get that close to it to put it out. So many memories, good and bad. Enjoyed your posts

The guy that owned Sam's was Mr. Zunis (can't remember his first name). True tidbit: His son is Stephen Nichols, a big soap opera star now (he played a character named Patch for a long time, maybe on General Hospital). I think Steve is on Young and Restless or one of those shows now.
