KennyE11 - I don't specifically remember a Liberal at the Salem Mall; I just remember the original Rike's and the Winter's Bank that used to stand out there -- Winter's because my mom used to work there. Once we left Trotwood in '66 for some cornfield called "Kettering", Salem and Shiloh Springs was too much of a hike. Then in '69/'70 they built some thing called the "Dayton Mall" (in Miami Township!) where a barn used to stand at the corner of 725 and 741. And just down the road from there was the SouthLand 75 Dive-In! How cool was that? It sounded as if you had driven to Florida for a movie. But I don't remember them playing Bingo on the screen between the movies -- with everyone honking their horns as if they all won -- like they did at the Dixie and the North Star. Like Sam says in the movie Avalon: "If I knew everything was going to change, I would have tried harder to remember."

I remember Liberal in Salem Mall. Next to the cinema (and prior to the cinema, the space was just empty I think). And across from Liberal was that nightclub lounge where Trudi and the Hopple Street Exit often played.

wolfcreek - Your memory is a little foggy regarding the Liberal Market location. The Liberal Market was at the North Entrance to the mall - that is the wing that was remodeled to two floors when they added the JC Penney. The cinema was at the South Entrance to the mall, across from MCL Cafeteria.
I believe the lounge you are remembering is the one across from Rikes, near the West Entrance to the mall. I forget the name (CarlaTM can help with that one), but that is the location where the Funway Freeway arcade moved to (originally on the outside of the mall next to Winters Bank).

I couldn't remember the name of the lounge and had to google it. It was the Tijuana Lounge. I was too young to go there but we would stand outside and listen to the music. I loved Trudi and the Hopple Street Exit.

Oh and I forgot to add that I remember the lounge being across from the cinema, near where MCL was later. I don't remember it being by Rikes. But we are talking about 40 some odd years ago. So I might be mistaken.

carla & wolfcreek - Now you have me confused about the location of the Tijuana Lounge / Funway Freeway. I remember the South Wing of the mall (east wall) starting with Mayors Jewelers on the corner. Mayors Records - which stared as a closet sized store off the jewelry store - having a large exterior kiosk along the wall, but then I can't remember any other stores along that wall before the MCL Cafeteria. I was picturing the lounge on the West Wing, south wall next to Donnenfelds, across from Rikes.
I wish I had an old flyer from the mall indicating store locations, but in trying to visualize walking through the mall, some of the locations are becoming a little foggy.

Calhoun thanks for the info but thought Lofinos was gone. If its still there will go when weather gets way better. Might be a nice change from the usual haunts. By the way does anyone remember the Italian deli on the backside of Town and Country called Savinos? Used to go with a friend of mine when she babysat their children.

lmd - Yes, I remember Savinos'. It was my mom's go-to place for ingredients to make her lasagna. The car smelled like Italian sausage for a couple days afterwards.

We shopped at that Ft McKinley Liberals all the time; don't recall it being any dirtier than any other grocery of the day. I remember really wanting one the dolls that were always displayed above the produce and one year Santa delivered.
Mom collected quite a few books of King Corn Trading stamps back then from Liberals, but for the life of me I can't recall what she ever cashed them in for. ---------- Beastie Mama Those who cannot remember the past are probably just old and stressed.

xtra-spatial, I remember those dolls and lots of other large toys displayed above the produce too! In my memory, they are about two stories above ground! So out of reach..
Kenny, yes I think you're right about the location of Liberal in Salem Mall. That was, as you say, the north wing. So heading from the main fountain (which I loved), you'd head towards the Mayers stores, and past, I think, a florest and some other shops that didn't hold my interest as a kid, and then you'd see Liberal on the right.
But I'm sure the Tijuana Lounge was across from the cinema, near what was the pet store (Pets 'N Such?, or was that the pet store in the KMart strip?). I bought a white mouse at the Mall pet store. I'm pretty sure it was next to the Funway Freeway. Yet I can't quite picture the entrance to that wing. I think it was maybe midway between the Rikes location and the central fountain (which was across the hall from the Bottom Half, a hip bell-bottom shop, and that Bombay Bicycle Shop. So if you're heading from the fountain to Rikes, the Tijuana & cinema wing would be on your left. But I can't remember what store would have been on the corner of that intersection.

wolfcreek - The Salem Mall store configuration is really bugging me, so I will continue my investigation. I probably have an old mall brochure somewhere, or an old JH or DDN newspaper clipping that would give me a clue, but I'll have to do some digging. So far, all I have is the overall mall layout indicating the anchor stores, both before and after the renovation to the North Wing, which I found on the Mall Hall of Fame website.
Also, I think I need to start a new topic, since this Liberal Market topic keeps veering off onto a Salem Mall discussion. My Fault!!!

@ miles Yep, the O'Rourkes. Tom, Red, and Jimmy. I worked for Tom at the Shell at 48 and Whipp (late 70s), then his brother-and-law took over the business. I worked for Mark until the mid-80s.

strayrider - a last word before we develop our own blog about Shell stations - I'm sure we crossed paths, hope you're doing well. To this day when I'm asked what my favorite job has been - most people I work with know that I've lived in several states and have had a few different careers - I always say 'pumping gas' without hesitation! People under 40 don't know what I'm saying and people over 40 (especially the ones in suites) think I'm kidding until they see I get a little angry about it when I think about all that we've lost. Pay at the pump?! Yeah, you used to pay me, and I washed your dirty windows too! See you around, man...

@ miles Oh yeah, I have lots of fond memories from working at that Shell station at 48 and Whipp. I basically came of age there. It was torn down and rebuilt recently (much to my lament) and all that I could think was: "If only those walls could talk, they'd be screaming". Sadly, several of my co-workers and friends from those days have since passed away; unfortunately not of old age. RIP: Rusty (cancer) RIP: Pat (cancer) As well as an employee of Frisch's that was located next door. RIP: Cindy (cause of death unknown) And, I believe, a former employee of Centerville Automotive (owned by Tom & Red O'Rourke). RIP: "Cribs" (ran over by a bus just this past year)

I remember Liberals Market in Downtown Dayton on Third St in part of the Arcade. Our family would shop there. the Shearers were very nice to their customers and allowed credit to customers to purchase food products. LiberalS is where our family purchase its first Black Angus beef. Little did I know that The Shearers had a farm where they raised Black Angus steers. I think it was called Shearbrook Farm. As a Boy Scouts for Troop 19 headquartered in Westminister Presbyterian Church we use to camp nearby it on Lynxweilers's Farm. Mr Lynxweiler was our scoutmaster. In those days the arcade was alive with stores, food markets, restaurants, clothing stores and 5 and dime department stores.

I went to work for Liberal Markets at the Airway store in 1970 at the age of 17, and worked there until 1978. When I trained for store management, I was at the stores at Salem and Grand, Forest Park, and Linden Ave. Then after training, I returned to Airway, later working at Troy St., and the traffic circle on North Dixie. I will answer any questions anyone has if I can.

olds 88, You are correct. Liberal bought their beef from various meat packers including Suchers, Val Decker, Braun Bros, etc. We sold them sides of beef but not very often. The Farms was mostly for Breeding of Black Angus cattle which have become very popular today.
