The 1950's and early 60's was a special time for Rock Bands. The music style was fairly new, and there really weren't that many Good Bands to play the gigs. A lot of the bands played 3 chord Venture type songs, which was still fun to listen to. As time went on the music expanded and it was a lot of fun to grow with it. I played in one of the local bands and had the time of my life. I think the first local band I heard was Teddy & The Rough Riders. It must have been about 1960. They were by far one of the better groups and when I heard them, all I wanted to do was play in that band or one like it. What are some of your memories about the local groups ?

I think your right Joey. He had a band called The Young Americans with one charting single on WING called The Coconut Stomp. I think it was recorded live at the Coconut Lounge in Urbana near Springfield. He also played with the Mark 5 when they were the house band at The Diamond Club. He also had a few other singles minus the Bands.

She's Neat was recorded by Dale Wright & The Rockets out of Cincinnati. Dale was a DJ at one of the top 40 stations in Cincinnati. He was on the local Fraternity Label out of Cincinnati.

Thanks for the name correction. I remember my older sister had this song and played it a lot. I was younger and at that time probably was listening to Johnny Horton. Music didn't really didn't mean much to me till the Beatles.

Johnny Horton?
I recently watched a TV show about the Battle of New Orleans, which prompted me to go to You Tube to look for the Johnny Horton song. I had forgotten the name Johnny Horton until I looked up the song.

Johnny Horton had a rash of top 40 songs in the early sixties before dying in an auto accident. Battle Of New Orleans, North To Alaska, Sink The Bismarck to name a few. Does anybody remember Ivan & The Sabres and what famous band they became ?

Were the McCoys called the RickZ Combo before they made it big?

Yep. Your both right. First name was The Rick Z Combo, then they changed it to Rick & The Raiders. About this time, Paul Revere & The Raiders was breaking big, so when Bang Records signed them, They changed it to The McCoys.

I always thought it was strange that both "Hang On Sloopy" and "Fever" started out the same. I wonder if whoever wrote Hang on Sloopy, receives $$$ for Ohio State playing it.

Does anybody remember The Rambling Rebels from the early to mid 60's ? I think they were from Fairborn and played a lot of Saturday Afternoon dances at VFW and American Legion Halls. Their lead guitar player was Jim Wooton. He was better than average and played with another group about 64 or 65 at Little Mickey's

Hey trolleyfan! I believe your first name is Barry, if so you were very influential to me about taking up the bass..
Probably the biggest song the Mark V had was Hey Conductor.. After the Mark V Flaherty joined a band named The Grey Imprint. Trolleyfan, you may remember one the the members of that band as well..

My first name is Barry. I know Jon (Jason) Hollinger and Mike Losekamp from the Mark V, also Green Lyte Sunday and went to Elementry School with Susan Darby. I also played for several years with Marvin, Betty & The Triumphs, so between the bands I was in and the ones we hung around, I knew several musicians from that era. I would love to know who you are, and most likely would remember you. It's a lot of fun to have somebody to talk about the good old days with. That's one of the fun things about this blog.

Nope ! Know exactly who you are. How have you been Fred ? I moved to Atlanta Georgia in 1970, so have lost touch with a lot of things back home. I still have family up there and come up every once in a while. My Mom & Dad passed away recently, and they are buried in the Bellbrook Cemetary, so it gives us a reason to come home when ever we can. Are you still playing Bass for anybody ? Keep in touch.

Does anybody remember the 3 records (45's) that Teddy & The Rough Riders released ? I'll tell you that the first one was on the Tilt Label and the last two was on the Huron Label. Huron was distributed by King Records out of Cincinnati. I understand that Huron Records was started by Bob Holiday, the Disc Jockey who was one of WING's lively guys, and also Teddy & The Rough Riders Manager.

I talked to Tom Fortner last year. He told me the band is still together and does special events around Dayton, and he took over his Dad's reality business.

I was the Piano/Organ player for Marvin, Betty, & The Triumphs. I was in College in 1966/67 and it got harder to get back home on the weekends. They used another keyboard player the weekends I couldn't get home, then Betty had a baby & quit. By 1968 it was pretty much over for us, but we had 4 or 5 terrific years and had lots of fun.

Hi Cilla46. I do remember Your brother in-laws band. We used to play at the same venues. Forest Park Caverns, Wampler's Ballarena, Little Micky's, and They were one of the premier bands to play many times at The Diamond Club. The Triumphs were a few years ahead of them along with Teddy & The Rough Riders, Ivan & The Sabres, The Ramblin Rebels and a few others. Most of those bands started to fade from the scene by 1967 and 68, While your Brother in-laws band and a lot of new ones took over. The music was changing. Motown, 60's Rock and British Invasion were no longer top style. Blue Eyed Soul, Garage, Larger bands with horn sections were taking over and in a few short years everything had changed, but everybody in the business had their day and loved it. Thanks for the Link. I'm glad Von is still making music.

I went to High School with the drummer of the Pictorian Skiffuls. One of the best of that era of Dayton area Rock bands. I believe at that time he was playing a Red Sparkle set of Rogers drums. Those were the days!
