When I was growing up in east Dayton in 1950's I remember a large building along Linden Ave. with a big band near the roof reading OLD RELIABLE COFFEE. This 4 or 5 Story brick building was painted light tan and sat along the Pennsylvania RR tracks that crossed Linden Ave. on a bridge. I've seen several coffee tins for sale on eBay that say the coffee brand was from a company called Dayton Spice & Milling Co. I'm wondering what type of business it was and when and how it went out of business.

I live in that area. The area you are describing sounds like either the former Hewitt Soap factory. Or maybe across the street what was once Huffman Mfg. The railroad tressel is just past Hamilton Ave. Just beyond that, there is a railroad siding track that crosses Linden that obviously hasn't been used in decades. The Hewitt factory is still painted a light tan color. Next time I go by, which I do on a daily basis. I look closer to see if there any sign on the old signage.

The Old Reliable Coffee bldg. is on the same side of Linden as Davis Sewing Machine bldg. (Huffman Mfg.) but on the south side of the rr tracks. I think Dayton Public Schools used it as a warehouse and/or arts center in the 1970's.

The Old Reliable Coffee sign that I remember that was on a tall building for years was on the south side of East Third Street between Dutoit and Keowee (formerly Montgomery St.) Streets, across from 2's engine house. The Pennsylvania RR was in back of this building. It was there from the time many years ago when I was a child growing up a few blocks away. Could this be the building you are remembering?

rdebross, I remember the building you are asking about. If memory serves me correctly, it was just east of the old Mendelson's Surplus, on the north
side of Linden Ave.,near where Richard St. ended.
The "Eat A Bite " was on the south side of Linden.

Billd1952 Yep, it was across from the Eat A Bite. I wonder if they roasted and processed coffee beans in the building or just used it as a warehouse. I haven't seen any cans or artwork from the brand beyond the mid-1940's. Perhaps someone knows something about the history of the Dayton Spice and Milling Co. that produced Old Reliable Coffee.
