Saw that the Sears store in Trotwood is closing. This was the last remaining building of the Salem Mall. It seemed kind of odd the stand alone Sears store on the site. When the mall originally opened. Sears was one of the anchor stores. Rikes was the other one. Which later became Shillito/Rikes. Then Lazarus. That part of the mall was gone by the time the stores took the Macy's name. This was all before the expansion sometime in the early 80s that brought the second level and the JC Penney and the food court. Sears hadn't said what will become of the building when they close the store. I imagine it will meet the same fate as the rest of the former mall. Give you an idea of how long that Sears store has been there. The Sears and Roebuck logo is on all the door handles of the entry doors. Last time I went through there. I didn't even recognize the intersection of Salem Ave and Shiloh Springs Rd.

This is just my opinion. But it seems to me everything around Salem Mall and Salem Ave started sliding when the Trotwood and Madison Twp. merged back in 99. A lot of people I knew who had lived in that area for years, they started moving away. Englewood, Clayton and areas north. What brought the mass migration on, I don't know. But when the population shifts like. It had an effect on the area businesses. Once the slide started. It went from there to where that area is now. Even farther down Salem Ave getting into Dayton. Its nothing like it used to be. luv my Dayton. I don't know what is out there in the Trotwood area to bring in money. As I posted earlier. I haven't seen it in quite some time. I live in the East end of Dayton now. Have for several years.

As for Sears I have heard rumors for awhile that they and Pennys are falling on hard times.Hate to see that happen as both have been a fixture in the area for years. When one store closes it becomes a slippery slope and isn't good for the area. As for Salem Mall I believe their losses became so great from theft that the stores bailed one after another. By the way Mark, I was a resident of Kettering for many years and also ended up in east end and love it where I'm at.

The fate of the Salem Mall was sealed after the USAF pilot was attacked at the mall, resulting in him losing sight in one of his eyes. I think this was in the early 80s. The local news gave that story a great deal of airplay, and people starting avoiding the mall. Also, was told later the military folks at WPAFB were ordered to not patronize the mall, and many of the base civilians decided to follow suit.

Didn't remember that incident but how aweful. Guess the trouble was already out there. Think Malls all have had issues and still are. People looking for something to do besides shop and making the Malls hangouts. When they try to enforce policies then they end up having ACLU in their faces. Life has become a free for all for the criminal element.

Whats funny now is the victim is the perp. You didnt lock you doors to your house ,you left keyes in car . you let car run while on your property or you had the nerve to leave something of value in your car.The laws are now in the bad guys favor and we let it happen. The above examples were normal activities back in the day.

Kind of normal behavior now adays also. Logic is the non criminal should be smart enough to protect their belongings. Insurance companies have a problem when theres a loss and you werent being responsible. They will probably pay your loss but then cancel your policy. As we all are aware the criminal isn't held too the same standards because of lack morals-values
and brain function.Seems to be worse now than ever. Wrong has become right and right has become wrong and something totally wrong with that thought process.
By the way olds went by your old homestead over week end and the area is still in fine shape. Lots of fun times.

You dont have to be a rocket scientist to know that lack of moral decline is the root of this and crime is rampant in these areas. Sorry sad of state!

LMD, My point was that our way of life has changed and respect for private property or should i say fear of being caught has has been diminished. That is on our judges and prosecuters.Went through that house about ten years ago. After many years the place had not changed.Brought a few tears to my eyes.

Who remembers Emoff's Furniture. It was in the same shopping center as Rex TV. I worked there in high school in the mid 70s.

Almost forgot Emoff and the crime taken against them.Don't know how many stores they had but there was one out in Centerville off of 48 and thought it was there that the murder took place. Crime back then was just the starts off what we see now.Drug use I believe was the sign of things to come. Addictions can keep people from being hired and they still need funds to live and feed their habits.

No, Mr. Emoff was kidnapped from the Salem store at closing time. The eerie thing was that he was kidnapped by a former employee who had also worked at the Dayton newspaper where I also worked at the time. I didn't know the man but it was creepy that he worked at both places that I did.

Miami Hardware closed because they couldn't match the prices of Lowe's and Home Depot. The building is gone and it's now a parking lot for Good Sam, I guess.
