SPENT MANY SUMMER DAYS GOING TO NUMEROUS POOLS. NOT SURE I HAD A FAVORITE. OLD RIVER WAS THE BIGGEST DRAW, THEN CAME THE VARIOUS OTHERS THAT THE CITY AND SURROUNDING AREAS HAD.TRAILSEND AND CRESTWOOD WERE PRIVATE BUT HAD FRIENDS WHO WERE MEMBERS. THERE ALSO WAS A POOL BEHIND KRAMERS ON IRVING AVE BUT HAVE FORGOTTON THE NAME. PHILLIPS POOL WAS ANOTHER ONE THAT I TRIED. I KNEW KIDS FROM ALL OVER AND WOULD MEET THEM IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS. ALSO WAS KETTERING POOL. IN THOSE DAYS POOLS WERE EASY TO COME BYE BUT TRY TO FIND ONE TODAY! ANYTHING THAT KEPT KIDS BUSY BACK THEN HAS BEEN REMOVED AND PEOPLE WONDER WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR YOUTH.

The pool next to Kramer's was Oak-Day Pool. This was our "regular" pool. It was private but a summer pass for a kid was less than $10.00! They had swimming and diving classes and even some pretty high diving boards. Try to find a pool with a high dive (or any diving board) today! Another thing that we used to have were supervised activities at the city parks. Kids could go there to have fun and college aged folks got to work the summer keeping an eye on them. Now many city parks are run down and unsafe even for adults.

Rucky#1 Bomberger was the first pool I attended also back in depression days of the 1930's, if I could find enough pop or milk bottles to cash in. My mom would only let me go there on Mondays when they changed the water. I hated that because the water was so cold then. Mom always said that it was the community bath tub otherwise and we could get a disease. I do remember that the water became so dirty by the end of the week that you couldn't see the bottom of the pool, but I was a kid who didn't pay attention to such things. Still Mom wouldn't give in. I guess she knew she couldn't afford to take us to the doctor if we caught some skin disease. By the '40's, after the depression days, the pool had cleaned up quite a bit and I was allowed to go anytime. BTW, Bomberger Park was/is on East Fifth St. across the street from Stivers High School where I graduated in 1948, and not Wayne Ave.. We used to ride our bikes over to Eastwood Park and go swimming in that pool also, when I was a teenager. I always had to push my bike up 4th street hill, no many how many times, I tried getting a head start. I also remember walking back in the park to a waterfall. Wonderful summer days back then!

Bentz, was the J.C.C. the same pool as the Trotwood Aquatic Club? I went there in the early 60s. It was a great pool and had those inground trampolines as well. It may not be the same place because it wasn't behind anything there was a large yard and drive back to the pool from the road.

Ared - They are not the same pools. The JCC was off of Denlinger Road near Salem Ave. The Trotwood Aquatic Club was on Broadway (Union Road) in Trotwood.

I was one of the lucky ones who everyday all I had to do was run out the door down the drive and there it was,our own olympic size swimming pool, with a high diving board and a low diving board. We had a bathhouse for the girls and a bathhouse for the boys, our own lifeguards, who gave swim lessons, and fresh clean towels for when it was time to have lunch or dinner,I lived for the pool during the summers. There were some concessions we had to give into and they were on saturday mornings either the colored kids"before integration"or if I remember right the kids with polio till lunch time,I use to stand at the fence and just envy them for being in there,I would have swam with them but you know....and before we could swim in it of coarse they had to clean the pool for us.but then again we were at Shawen Acres.
