We lived in Northridge in the early sixties. Loved those drive in's.. The fireworks shows at both of them on the 4th of july.. They used to compete to see who would have the better fireworks.. Drove a quarter midget at the track on needmore rd across from the ontario store.. my sponser was the PHILLIPS 66 station at needmore and dixie across from Sandys drive in.. I had an orange car with the PHILLIPS 66 logo on it. I was just a kid but my bro's and sis's were in high school at northridge.. I remember all the cool car's the kids had at the drive ins and all the cool music coming from them, and how they all gathered at the CHARBURGER Rest on N.dixie next to the high school after movies and football games.. All the fights with the rivalries like BUTLER.. I guess they were trying to impress all (The California Girls ), so to speak.. All the cruising up and down n.dixie.. The STRIP as they called it never slept.. Fun times. When Northridge was the cool place to be..

Northridge Kid. Some of our midgets had twin engines that v2 may have been one of them. and your right they would fly. Some of us would take them up to the north end of the old airport on the old runway's and run them flat out and time them..It was nothing to get 85 to 90 mph out of them.. One afternoon i was practicing at the track on needmore rd and lost control and ran through the fence and a fence pole, and ran over my brothers leg, i knocked out a lower front tooth and split my lip inside.and i busted my helmet and face mask. that car was messed up.during practices they didnt have the bales up and the the damn brakes was just a lever on the outside of the car, I just didnt get to it fast enough.. Do you remember a bright pink car that was driven by a girl?. She was around eleven years old, and she would just kick everyones butt. She went all the way to the nationals in california and took second place. How old were you then if i may ask?. We lived at Morris apts, and on arthur ave. Our house was right on the corner by Morrison School where the buses came in.. There was a house right by the play ground that had a jack ass. the house faced stop eight road across from haers party house, we used to ride that thing all over the school yard in the summer, it was a blast. At Morrison school in the summer time, they had park people come to the school and they would have games and snacks and we would watch old movies in the auditorium. movies like robinhood and the three stooges, abbott&costello.. Do you remember the little shopping center just north of and right next to the ontario store?. There was a little bakery there and a hamburger shop.. We lived on palasaides Dr all the way down the hill to the very end next to the woods, the creek was at the back of our apt..

Northridge Kid. ( JUNIOR ), I started at Morrison School in the first grade in 1961..I was only five when I started. I was seven years old when I started driving the midgets, so you are a little older than me. You would be my bro's and sis's age..Or close to it.. and some of my cousins, the Benson's.. They lived on blake and then on division st.. There were three boys in our family, Ricky, Randy, and me Robin. and two girls, La Vonne (snooky ), and my other sister sherry.. I was the youngest.. My brothers played little league baseball and played at the fields along I75. The funny thing is, there were also three brothers that lived on Blake ave just down the street fom us and their names were also Ricky, Randy, and Robin, Their ages were the same in order as our's, Young to old. but Robin was older than me, but he was the youngest of them too.. isnt that hoot!.. They were the Allens.. It was a little confusing for people in the neighborhood.. Especially when the mom's started calling our names to come home. One mother would call our names and all six boy's would run back to their collective homes.. We hung together some.. My brothers and sisters went to Northridge High, I never did.. As to the Gifford Resturant, I dont believe I remember it. But I do know where the hvac business is located that you speak of.. To this day I still get my pizza from Hoagies.. They still deliver to me.. And before I move to adams county, I'm going to buy several pizza's and spiders from them to take with me and freeze. I most likely will not get a chance to have them again.. I do remember going to Maggies with my mother for lunch a lot. It was one of her favorites. And Sunny's Superette the little store on N.Dixie.. I went with my mother to Pastimes when she bowled in the ladies leagues in the morning's.. My mother and father belonged to the American Legion on N.Dixie back then and went there some. And, they had good friends that owned Buds Corral on N,Dixie.. When they retired and closed the resturant they gave my mother their place settings from the resturant that they purchased in Mexico. Junior, Do you remember Bud's Corral ?. That was a great place.. I did have a good freind that lived across the street on arthur ave, his name was David Giesel, he was a big kid for his age, twice plus 1/2 my size, he wore a size thirteen shoe in boys, I was really small for my age I think I wore a size 4,David's parent's names were Martha and Ralph.. They were great people and so was David. My first grade teachers name was Mrs,Donahoo, and the Principle's name was Mr,Ashbaugh.. Do you remember a girl by the name of PATTY BROWN, she lived on Arthur ave, and I think she was around your age.. There is a true story around that name..I dont think i could share that with you here. but you can email me if you wish and i'll tell you about it..

Copson, I'm interested in the Buck's murders also, and you being the son of a cop, do you know anything about the McFaddin murders in East Dayton on Caho Street around May 28, 1958? A mother (Margaret McFaddin) killed 2 daughters and I think Injured other children. Her husband was a Dayton firefighter. She was sent to Lima for evaluation and I wonder what ever became of her. One of the children was in my children's class at Ruskin School.

Syxpack,,,that sounds so familer to me,when I was a kid, we lived on Xenia Ave and I remember going to a viewing{my first}to see 2 girls, one was about 10 or 11 and the other one was under 2, I think, don't recall if the older girl was in my class or not.I did go to Ruskin school at that time. I don't recall there being a funeral home in that area,,is Caho Street in the same neighborhood as Xenia Ave?

Bonnie, first I need to clear up my mistakes. Margaret was the name of one of the victims, not the mother and the name is spelled McFadden, with an "e" and not an "i". It sounds like these are the ones you remember. Darlene was 1 year old and Margaret was 11 (born in 1947) Caho St. is just a block long between Nassau and Dover and it is just a block south of Xenia Ave. off of Nassau. It comes out on Dover very close to where the old Xenia Avenue Feed Store was. I think one of the injured children was in one of my children's classes. We lived on Church Street that dead-ended into St. Mary's playground. My daughter and 2 sons, Karen, Rick and Jack Syx went to Ruskin School. There was Luthman's Funeral Home on Xenia Avenue almost across the street from my brother-in-law's bakery (Evan's Bakery, before it was sold to Doblers) on the corner of Xenia and McClure. May I ask where you lived on Xenia Avenue. My late husband and I were both raised in East Dayton. In fact he was born at 25 Xenia Ave. which is no longer there.

syxpack,we lived at 121 Xenia , 2 doors from the ice cream place, funny, whenever I get over that part of town,,,the streets and everything looks alot smaller now, when I was a kid,Xenia Ave. looked so wide and seemed to be a long walk to school and Smales pretzel shop was so close to my house,I thought it was further away. I had a friend who lived on Corwin Street and she went to St. Mary's

Bonnie, The streets all seem much smaller to me also when I go down there, and I was an adult when we left there. Weren't Smales pretzels good? I can still smell them as they baked. We used to buy the broken ones by the bag-full, and put mustard on them. It's so sad to see what is happening to that neighborhood now. You can find a prostitute and a druggie on every corner and in-between. I won't even go down Xenia Avenue without my son or grandson. I lived behind St. Marys Church on Steele Ave. in 1932-1933 and again on Church Street in my teens in the 1940's, so I was always very familiar with Xenia Avenue. Was the Federation Movie House still there when you lived there? When I was a small child, our doctor had his office above The Federation. He was Abe Kuhr, MD. Also was the Corn Crib still next to the movie house. My three oldest children have very fond memories of Xenia Avenue as they walked to Ruskin School and back twice a day (They came home for lunch) They say St. Marys Church is still just as beautiful as always inside.
