I was telling a friend the other day I remember one of the local schools in Dayton had a jet fighter on its playground. This would have been in the early/mid 60s, seems like it was in East Dayton, or at least east of downtown.
Anybody remember this??

Yep - do a search on here. It was Beavercreek HS in about 63-64. It was a Canberra that landed in the parking lot between 2 buildings. The Growing up in Beavercreek Facebook page has a good bit about it including pictures.
Try this shortcut go down a bit and there are pics and an article about it. 65 Beavercreek Yearbook

I remember a jet was at Island Park in Dayton. I don't know when it was removed. It would be taken apart to steal the metal if it was still there today.

Guess he DID say ON the Playground - not Crashed in the Parking lot = MY BAD. But then again, it wasn't at a school. Oh well

I believe the little plane from island park is just to the east of I75 north of needmore between the old motel and poe ave.

mjr1960's comment peaked my curiosity. Using the Google Maps satellite view, I saw what appeared to be an aircraft in the back of a parking lot at VFW Post 6560 on Wadsworth Rd.
Does anyone have information on this? Is this really the same plane? I didn't find any information on the Post's website...

That "little plane" off I75 north was a Ryan Firebee, a unmanned aerial vehicle originally designed as a target drone, but later used as a photo/electronic recon drone during the Vietnan War. The last time I saw this particular one, it was just off the highway, and looked like someone had cut a crude cockpit into it.

The aircraft I was asking about was full sized, maybe an F-84 or F-86. The more I thought about it, I think it was either in the Belmont or Mad River area. We lived in Xenia at the time, but drove frequently to Kettering. Maybe off Woodman or Smithville?

I have faint recollections of that, too. I grew up in east Dayton (Linden Heights now) and had relatives scattered all over and I know I've seen it. For some reason I was thinking it was down closer to the Burkhart/Findlay area, but that may be an old playground airplane-like jungle gym memory creeping in.
In any case, I'm thinking it was the F-84 with the straight wing rather than the swept wing F-86, but I'm sure it had the front air intake.

Friend of my Dad's says he thinks it was on the playground at Immaculate Conception School on Smithville. Thinks it was an F-80, or an offshoot like the T-33 or F-94. If I get a chance, I'll call the church to see if it has a historian who might be able to confirm it was there.

There was a Jet at emaculate conception, and one at Island Park. The jet from island park was moved to Dog Leg Rd at a Camp for disabled kids, along the stillwater river. Camp Variety was the name of the camp.
