That sounds about right, the taste was the first thing to go downhill at that place.

They may have been 50 Cents at one time, my first dealings with Arby's was when they had the grand opening for the one on Brown Street (Next door to the Red Barn) They may have had other locations previous to opening the Brown Street unit, but during that time it was 69 Cents for a Roast Beef and 31 Cents for a Shake.

There was one on Colonel Glenn right where the old New germany Trebine Rd met it. They closed off that end of Ned Germ to build the Home Depot. The road that goes down next to Patterson Field (National?) had a Exxon station on the NE corner and the Frostop was right next to it toward Wright State.

Does anyone remember the Maple Grove restaurant? I think it was on East Third St in the 60s. My parents used to tell me stories of the funny things that happened there. How about Hi Lees? My dad still has shot glasses from that place. Always told me it was a family kind of bar.

The building that housed the Maplegrove Restaurant caught fire just last year. The sign remained there, but I believe that it had been closed for some years. Joe Bissett, the founder of the Grubb Steak Restaurant, started out as a bartender at the Maplegrove.

Doug68, thanks for the info- sorry to hear about that. Even though I was a small child when we used to go there, to this day I remember the smell of their french fries- so different than anything today. Funny thing about the Hasty Tasty- I recently read a fictional short story that was set in Dayton and they mentioned the Hasty Tasty and it triggered a long forgotten memory of a great restaurant! Glad to know they are alive and well!

Did anyone ever hear of "The Haunted House Bar and Grill"? I swear to God I drove by this place in the late 70's. I seem to recall Halloween decorations on it in the summertime.

turbo, JeffN, and Maxed out: referencing your June '09 posts about the Sandy's location, the ice cream store in Page Manor and the mini golf course on Airway Rd....Sandy's was further down on Woodman Drive where it meets Airway Rd. The sign was a big cutout figure of a girl in Sottish outfit dancing the Highland fling--I guess to suggest the prices would please a Scotsman? I remember the ice cream store too. My memory has it that it's the first place I ever had a sugar cone--the ones that are dark brown and pointed instead of the flat bottom ones. AND about that mini golf course---it was HUGE! It seemed to cover several acres and went up and hill and into the edge of a woods. It was well lighted for evening play. My boyfriend and I went there on dates in '65-'66 or so. I've never heard anyone else mention it and was beginning to think I had dreamed it. There was a Robert Hall clothing store along there somewhere on the same side of the road just a little later on. My husband to be bought his wedding tie there on the morning of the wedding--June 21, 1969 ;-)

DIA - The Robert Hall store was across the street from where National Rd dead ended on Col Glenn - National has now been extended on South across Col Glenn.
I lived on New Germany just East of where the Friefield Commons Mall is now - Brook Hollow. That was all farms back then. Before College Hills was built across from Brook Hollow there was a farm and a neighbor school friend kept a horse in a barn there. We would ride the horse bareback together down to that Putt Putt and let the guy that rane it ride the hourse in exchange for playing golf. That would have been about 62-63. Remember the Rootbeer place across fromt the Putt Putt? That is the first place a had some new food called a TACO - got hooked HA HA Going on down Col Glenn there was a Cassanos Pizza place before you started down the hill tward Page Manor. Still can't remember the Sandy's but DO remember when they opened the Long John Silvers. AH - those were the days.

I remember when the Sandy's switched over to Hardee's. A sad day. LOL Do you guys remember the Miller Department Store that was down the street from Sandy's at the corner of Woodman and Airway? I bought a lot of old 45's there.

I have been trying to think of the big box store and you mention Millers. But the one I'm thinking of was on the corner of Woodman and Burkhart. I can't remember one on Woodman and Col Glenn. I was just looking at Google Earth and it appears that the L shaped Airways Center isn't there anymore or has been changed around? There was a Gorocey store on one leg and Penneys on the other??

Woodman and Burkhart had a Kmart, and I too bought 45s at Millers. Don't remember the PuttPutt, but I was born in 64 so maybe I never paid attention. The ice cream place at Page Manor was a United Dairy Farmers. Had great pineapple sherbet! We'd stop there after fishing at Huffman Dam. Used to visit the Wright Brothers Memorial sometimes too on the way. A friend of mine and I were just talking about Sandy's the other day. She grew up in another area of the country and they had them too! We used to eat at the Burger Chef on Airway just beyond Woodman.

OK, I'm having a memory fart. I hung out at the Airways Parkmore but I'm having trouble figuring out just EXACTLY where it was. Was it out in front of the Airways Shopping center? There was a drive in parking area in the rear and I remember a BIG parking lot behind that that must have been the shopping center.

If you remember where Dizzy's Lounge was, Parkmoor's car hop was behind it. It would be partially in Burger King's lot. The restaurant itself sat back and occupied an area just west of BK's parking lot, as I recall.

On the burger side I'll have to stay with Parkmoor and, give me a double burger...Or, if you didn't want a big-box burger you could get Dayton's finest at the Maple Grove.............Cheeseburger in Paradise

I love the feeling of stepping back in time and there's not many places better to do that than the Embassy Grill on Ludlow. Its next to the now vacated Dayton Daily News building. I've been there the last two Friday's because that's the day they have Swiss steak and it is excellent. Since DDN moved out their business has taken a decided turn for the worse so I don't know how long they'll be around. Best to take advantage of these kinds of places before its too late.

I don't think the chains were affiliated. Bonanza had their following and Ponderosa had theirs. Two distinctly different tasting steaks. I think Dayton was a 'Ponderosa Town'.

In the 50s there was an italian restaurant somewhere on or near Brown or Warren St. The US 35 X-way took it out years ago. What was the name of that place, and any history would be helpful. For some reason I recall the restaurant was in a building that had at one time been a residence.

I have yet to find a "great" chili dog like A&W had in the 60's. Sonics is pretty good, Checkers is pretty good here in south Florida, but Oh I miss the chilidogs at the A&W Root Beer stand in Xenis in the late 60's.

There was a Burger Chef across the street from the Lowes-Ames Theater on North Main Street, close to North Town Shopping Center. There is a Lee's Famous Recipe business there now, built on top of the demolished Burger Chef. Do you remember the cool neon sign out front, anybody? "Burger Chef And Jeff".

There was a Burger Chef on Keowee Street, near the old Westward Ho restaraunt, one on Salem near the old drive in theater (what was the name of that place?), and one on East Third Street, as previously mentioned. I'm sure there were more, but that's all I can think of.

Andy - There are other threads elsewhere on this blog that address Burger Chef. There was one in Trotwood on Free Pike / Main Street, just west of Olive Road.

Marck - The drive-in theater on Salem Avenue was called the Salem Drive-In.

Many, many times I have dined at the Burger King on North Main. I would get a regular burger but with the condiment bar the 3/4" burger turned into a 2" masterpiece... And they were very good.

worked at the jeds steakhouse in 76 on 725 in centerville. Loved their salad bar but it will go down in my personal history as the worst job!! nothing worse than being 17 and having a manager no older than 21 wearing social climbing tassled loafers who made his money just trying to look busy :-)

There was a Jed's on Dorothy Lane in Kettering, I think they started out as "Country Jed's" and I remember they served something called "Jed Eye Peas". Later they renamed either "Jed's" or "Jed's Steak House". Food their under either name was better than that at most of the other family steak houses in the area.

I am trying to remember the name of the Italian restaurant that used to sit where BW's is now on Brown Street by UD across from Milano's. It was a Godfather's pizza before BW's. Before that though there was an italian restaurant there. Around the late 70's. Anyone remember?

There was a Burger Chef on Dorothy Lane right across the street from Rike's Kettering. My sister worked there in the late 60's. Also one on S. Dixie/Kettering Blvd that we used to stop at on our way to Cincy Reds games. And the first one I walked up to was on Airway near the railroad tracks. Hamburgers were 15 cents and cheeseburgers were 18 cents. The menu also included shakes and soft drinks, but not much else. The building on Airway was still there a year ago.

My Mom liked to shop at Beerman's downtown, and I hated going, but not much choice in those days. What made it bearable for me was going to eat later at the Virgina Cafeteria. Excelent prime rib and I loved their honey bran muffins. It is most likely gone now, but I wou,d have to say that it was my most favorite place to eat when I was younger.

Victoria Stationa - I was talking about them on a cruise last month. Used railroad cars, right? Did we have one in Dayton? After I moved to FL (72) there was a popular chain that started up called Beefsteak Charlies that started the all you could eat boiled shrimp idea. LOVED that.

Also, "nile" above mentioned the Morgan House Restaurant in Englewood that also featured a drive thru. It was just south of the Englewood Dam on N. Main Street. "Nile" heard that if you could eat(3?) huge Moron Burgers, the restaurant would award you with a special medallion/coin. Recently, a FACEBOOK friend of mine gave me one of those coins and validated what "nile" said.
