What was the street address of the former Dayton Union Terminal for railroads? From photo captions, it was near South Wilkinson and South Ludlow, but I would appreciate the exact address. Thank you.

From everything I've ever seen the address used was the corner of Sixth and Ludlow Streets.

Curt, thank you for the address info. Would you happen to know when Union station was built and when it was demolished?

Does anyone remember the huge model train layout they had back in the 50's? Not sure if it was there all the time as it might have been a special ocassion. I always wondered what happened to it.

My grandfather was a switchman for the B & O Railroad. He took me to the terminal many times. I don't know if anyone is aware, but the train layout was the city of Dayton. I also got to ride on an engine when it was turned around. I think I was about 5 yrs old. There was a huge round building somewhere near East Third St. and it contained a turntable. The engine was driven on to the turn-table and it was turned 360 degrees. My grandfather often took me to the caboose he stayed in at work. It was a big red B & O caboose and there were several men who stayed there and ate there. I rode the train many, many times because I was "free" until I was twelve and my grandmother had a pass so it didn't cost anything our to visit relatives in Indiana.

Driver62,
I remember the model railroad in Dayton Union Terminal, though it was probably bigger than life to me as I was 6 years old. I believe it was O scale. You could look at it through a window from one of the hallways off the waiting room. About 1958.

My Father worked for the post office which eventually became the US Postal Service. He scheduled the mail trains which came in and out of the terminal. My Mom and I sometimes dropped him off and picked him up from work. I went into the building a couple of times and was always in awe. It was Art Deco in decoration. I remember the marble and metal ash trays that I have since seen in antique stores for a lot of money. I also remember a classic news stand which had a huge display of comic books - my passion as a child.

The train layout was the actual train layout of the city of Dayton. At least, this is what my grandfather told me. He worked for the B & O.

I remember the newsstand and the comic books well. do you remember the lunch counter ? does anyone remember the old green REA express trucks that used to dock at their terminal under the overpass at the SW corner of the building ? I took my first train ride out of there on the old Penn Central "Spirit of st.Louis" we were going to New York City on vacation.
