I just ran a search for pet shops a little while ago and could find nothing.

There was one on Shoup Mill where Stumps market was located but it's a charter school now. I think there's one or more around the Dayton Mall or around the malls in Beavercreek.
EDIT: I checked the Yellow Pages and there's 3 Complete Petmarts, 3 Petsmarts and 2 Superpetz. There are also a few local pet stores.

I don't mean any modernistic mall stores.
I mean like Xenia Avenue Feed & Pet Supplies, my old dependable one which I believe has been gone for a while now.
Then there was Jack's Aquariaum, out somewhere more or less in the Belmont area. The owner died a couple of years ago.
And, more long ago there was a big feed store on West Third street about where College Street (I think) meets Third.
One on Salem Avenue beyond Delware/Cornell but not too far out offered my dad a beautiful California rabbit after our pet one died. He came back to the house so depressed at turning it down; but, we couldn't take on another one at the time. It needed a younger family.

I find it hard to believe no one else had pets.

I remember Jacks. First in a house somewhere off Watervaliet (sp?) then just down the street from the DayBel theater I think then he had a store on Linden just East of Smithville. I had bought a small red belly phirana that had gotten pretty big and when I moved to FL, I gave it to Jacks on Linden.
I also went occasionally to some place out near the Diamond club but just off of 75. Maybe off of Stewart? ----------

We had a big tank of golden fishes (goldfish) for a long time and went to the place on Watervliet for stuff needed. I remember tanks all along a wall.
It seemed he really wanted people to be aware of how to take care of their pet fish. Early on he noticed the nail polish on my hands and explained that such could contaminate the water they needed to breathe.

Anyone remember the DoctorX pet center that was just inside the main door and to the left on the lower level of the Dayton Mall? When I was a kid we always stopped in there to look at/pet the dogs & kittens. Thinking back, I'm guessing that wasn't the greatest situation for those animals to be in...

Xenia Avenue Feeds (formerly on Xenia Avenue) moved to Miamisburg into one of those strip-office warehouse complexes. You can read their sign from I-675 as you drive by. They are still in business as Xenia Avenue Feed Co. Inc. The Xenia Avenue store was turned over to a full-time warehouse when they first moved. I don't know if it is still in use for this purpose.
We used to go there to by big bags of Puppy and Dog food, Rabbit and Guinea Pig food, etc. Where else could you buy a 50 pound bag of Purina Guinea Pig food or Purina Worm Chow? It was a sad day when they closed their retail sales on Xenia Ave. Today they only have commercial customers.

I posted this in another thread but it was funny so I thought it would be appreciated here. The Piranah I bought from Jacks ate goldfish when he got bigger. I lived out in Coach & Four apts on Bigger Rd so I went to (I think it was an Elder Beermans(?) S of Centerville) that had a pet dept and I could get a dozen goldfish cheap. A nice elderly lady was netting them for me into a plastic bag and said she was thrilled to see a young person interested in keeping fish. I told her they were food for my piranah. She about had a cornary, dumped them back into the tank and told me to get out. Man that sucker was fast when you dropped one into the tank. ----------

I worked in a kennel back in the early 80s. We would go to the Xenia Ave Feed Store to load up on dry and canned dog food, cat food, litter. Fill up the back of a full sized Suburban! The building on Xenia Ave is still there. East End Community Services occupies it now.

Does anyone remember Driftwood Pet shop on Salem Ave. between Ravenwood Ave. and Catalpa Dr. I believe the Koonts family owned it. Another I remember in the 70's was on Patterson rd. near Shroyer and they specialized in salt water fish. I can't remember the name of that shop.
